Newsletter 10th March 2023

Dear Parents

It's been an eventful week. On Monday we had Helen Hayes (mp) in, who listened intently to our unique issues and needs. She has agreed to support us through lobbying the government.  She was thoroughly impressed with the school on her tour, particularly with how much it has grown since her last visit.

Strike Days

Next week on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th, teachers who belong to the NEU will be striking. As you already know, they do not need to tell us what their intentions are. We believe that school will again be partially open, and it is more than likely that the same year groups will be closed, similar to last time. Once Anthem agree to our risk assessment, I will write to you of the outcomes.

Message for the Friends:

Friends Gardening Day

Don't forget that tomorrow from 11am- 2pm there is a gardening day in the woodlands - all help and enthusiasm gratefully accepted.

Thanks to everyone who took part in our events last week and for all the bakers!
We raised a great £447 from the cake and uniform sale and a further £600 from the Bedtime Stories event, which will go towards new books for the library.

From the Friends of JKPS.

A VERY Important Announcement

Friends of Judith Kerr

We are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Judith Kerr Primary School with a special trip to the theatre!  This year would also have been Judith Kerr's 100th Birthday, and we will join Mog and a menagerie of creatures, little and large, for a lively and enchanting production with songs. These timeless tales of family and friendship are brought to life to allow a new generation of children to fall in love with Mog.

JKPS has managed to get a booking for the entire school, including staff for the day of Tuesday 18 July 2023. The school will be requesting volunteers to assist with travel on public transit as we get nearer to the date. Tickets for all students are guaranteed.

We are required to make a substantial deposit payment by 31st March, so please take action today and purchase tickets/make additional contributions to cover costs so that all children/staff can attend.

Neurodiversity and Additional Needs Celebration Week(s)

In the coming two weeks, JKPS will be celebrating all things neurodivergent and additional educational needs. We will be sharing a whole host of cognitive differences and additional needs with the children to raise awareness of neurodiversity and also some teachers will be sharing their own experiences of living and owning their superpowers! On the final week, we will be asking all children how we could make the world a better place to support children with additional needs/neurodivergence and will showcase that in a form of artwork! We look forward to sharing that with you in due course.

Below is some extra information regarding Neurodivergence and a JKPS WhatsApp group for SEN parents!

Did you know around 1 in 7 people (more than 15% of the population in the UK) are neurodivergent, meaning that their brain functions, learns and processes information differently to the average person. The term neurodivergent is often an umbrella term to describe various cognitive differences such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD.  Celebrating neurodiversity is about recognising these differences and the strengths that often accompany them, such as:

  • Honesty
  • Empathy
  • Attention to detail
  • Creativity
  • Logical thinking
  • Seeing things from a different perspective

Press this link – look at these amazing different thinkers:

Some children with differences such as these require additional support in certain areas. Likewise, parents of these amazing children may find it helpful to link up with others in similar situations. To that end, a WhatsApp group has kindly been set up by a JKPS parent, for parents who are nurturing the next generation of great mathematicians, inventors, leaders, activists, writers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, astronauts, gymnasts, scientists, architects….it is open to any parent who believes their child to have specific educational needs. To join the group, click this link: https://chat.whatsapp.com/DbYZmHRA8Ul1CcQkcVxbDb Thank you to Yuk-King Wong!

WANTED

The school would love to have someone (people) to volunteer to keep our library looking well-sorted and beautifully. The job would involve coming in once a week or fortnight and organising the books.

Please speak to myself or Keri if you are interested.
