‘One book, one pen, one child and one teacher can change the world’ – Malala Yousafzai
Our English curriculum is meaningful and provides children with real reasons to write, whether to explain, persuade, inform or instruct through specifically chosen texts from the Literacy Tree Curriculum. The Literacy Tree Curriculum is a complete, thematic approach to the teaching of primary English that places children’s literature at its core. We adopt this curriculum from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2; in Reception, children engage with some of the suggested Literacy Tree texts, alongside others which link to their individual interests and curriculum themes.
The Literacy Tree Curriculum immerses children in a literary world, therefore creating strong levels of engagement to provide meaningful and authentic contexts for primary English. Children become critical readers and acquire an authorial style as they encounter a wide-range of significant authors and a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
The Literacy Tree curriculum provides complete coverage of all National Curriculum expectations for writing composition, reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. All units of work lead to purposeful application within a wide variety of written outcomes. We recognise the importance of nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and are able to adapt their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes, and audiences.
Spoken language is developed through debate, drama and discussion using the issues raised through, and within, the text. We believe that children should be excited by literature, confident with their own abilities of reading, writing and spoken language.
